Closing an extraction socket with Geistlich Mucograft® Seal instead of an autologous punch graft saves the patient a painful wound on the palate. It also shortens the treatment time and creates fewer scars in the soft tissue. This is shown by a new study from Germany.1

There are many ways to seal an extraction socket after Ridge Preservation. Common methods, for example, are

  • sealing it with an autologous graft such as a free gingival punch graft
  • sealing it with a collagen matrix such as Geistlich Mucograft® Seal.

Various studies have shown that both methods lead to comparable volume preservation.2 The team of authors led by Prof. Stefan Fickl have now investigated in a retrospective case control study which of the two methods causes fewer scars. The authors modified a scar score from dermatology for evaluation. This is based on the scar length, invagination and color.

In all categories patients treated with the collagen matrix were in the lead. Fewer scars means for the patient: fewer measures for scar removal and a better esthetic result.

The authors conclude: "As soft tissue grafting with a porcine collagen matrix seems to be associated with improved esthetics, lower costs, shorter treatment times, and decreased patient morbidity, it may be a valuable alternative to soft tissue grafting with free gingival punch grafts."

It is the first study to measure the actual scarring associated with Ridge Preservation. Previous studies already showed that Ridge Preservation with Geistlich Bio-Oss® or Geistlich Bio-Oss® Collagen and Geistlich Mucograft® Seal or Geistlich Bio-Gide® reduces volume loss after tooth extraction3 and results in a decreased number of GBR4 and sinus lift5 procedures.
